Understanding New Employee Nerves and Overcoming Them

Starting a new job can be an emotional experience. Even your dream job can be fraught with uncertainty as you face new responsibilities, a new organization, and new coworkers. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar routines and the desire to put your best foot forward in novel surroundings.

To overcome these jitters, remember that everyone you’re working with was “new” at some point. Be patient with yourself and allow for time to adjust. Here are some tips to help you navigate your first day and beyond:

  • Be Accessible: Approach colleagues with a positive outlook and willingness to learn. Building relationships takes time, but a friendly demeanor can go a long way in making connections.
  • Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask for more information if you’re unsure about something. Doing so shows initiative and a desire to understand your role and responsibilities better.
  • Seek Support: Contact your Professional Development Coach, Team Lead, or department manager if you need guidance or support. They are there to help you succeed and can offer valuable insights as you settle into your new position.
  • Take Breaks: Remember to take breaks to relax and recharge when needed. Stepping away from your desk can help clear your mind and refocus your energy.
